LICENSE PLATE RECOGNITION CAMERAS!
SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE INFO!
For those of you who are having problems with license plate video then lets go through the many factors, and failures that can effect getting the right video of a license plate.
The most common is where cameras are not dead straight on to a plate.
There are problems with cameras located to high to the road creating bad camera angles.
There are situations where cars drive from left to right of a LPR camera that is pointed at a 45 degree angle to the road. It is just like a person walking past a window. Now you see them, and now you do not! You have a short time to grab the plate.
Then on top of that you have fields per second that create lines in the video, and it is next to impossible to see the plate info clearly. You need to put the camera in a place where the cars slow down, or better yet come to a complete stop.
Do not put your cameras on the "outside" of the gate. Cars will accelerate away from the gate making the LPR impossible.
Put your LPR cameras where the vehicle is trapped by the gate.
Do not forget to use a second wide angle camera to catch the whole gate view.
There are DVRs that are not fast enough to catch an image.
There are lenses that do not let enough light through, and then the camera has to hold the shutter open longer creating a blurry video shot.
You have to use the best lens that you can afford. There are lenses that do not pass IR. Make sure your lens will pass IR!
There are issues with cameras that do not have WDR, (Wide Dynamic Range). During the dusk time frame a dark car can drive through the shade of trees, and you cannot see the details of the car.
Do not use a cheap box camera, and call it a License Plate Camera!! It will not work!
Illumination is the next failure of LPR. Will you use electrical lighting, or will you use IR illuminators?
How will you run your wires? For new gate construction this is not a problem. For retro fits then you have a lot of preplanning to do before you do the install. Are you going to trench through sod, and roads, or parking lots to run your wires? Are you willing to spend money replaceing sod, laying concrete, or ashphalt? What happens if you damage the curbs of a road?
Would you be better off using wireless transmitters to send the video? You will need a transmitter for each camera used.
It may be easier to get the phone company, or the cable company to come out and run a line to your gate to give you internet.
Do you use IP cameras, and attach them to the ISP's modem? Do you use a DVR, and attach it to the modem?
You now have several options to view your cameras remotely.
