If I connect the PC directly to the cable modem everything works fine. If I install my Linksys router that I had laying around I can no longer connect to the cable modem. I can see the Linksys from the PC but it appears the Linksys cannot connect to the cable modem. Thinking it may be old settings I had made to the LInksys, I reset everything to factory settings. I also contacted Brighthouse to see if I had to make any special settings but they said the Linksys should work right out of the box. Do I have a Linksys that suddenly broke or is there some magic setting I need to make to have it work. Thanks.
The cable modem stores the first MAC address that it sees, and it will not recognize any other (keeps with the one PC connection philisophy). By resetting the cable modem it should see the router as the valid PC. The router will take care of coordinating all the other PC's. You will have to reset the modem if you ever connect another router, or a computer directly to the modem.
